Chapter 23

Twyla Bradshaw

Since Meredith refused to go to the hospital and was terrified of going home so her parents could see her, Logan took her back to his place. His mom was gone for the night again, so no one had to know she was there.

Like every time Mrs. Downing went on her weekend trips, I told my mom I was staying at Meredith’s, so the three of us were camping out in the living room.

My stomach was curdling, the dinner we’d eaten earlier not digesting properly. Refusing to leave her side until she fell asleep, I’d not had a chance to purge, and now everything was cramping.

Finally asleep in the guest room, Logan asleep in his bed, I carefully slid off the mattress to go to the bathroom. As I passed his room, I heard the clank of that mysterious metal box and stopped. Furrowing my brows, I carefully twisted the knob and pushed the door open just enough to see.

The air filled with the scent of something burning, he was sitting on the floor, leaning against his bed. A long, rubber like rope clenched in his teeth, he was tightening it around his bicep above his elbow. Patting the area, he picked up a needle and jabbed it into his skin right above the compass tattoo.

Ice rolling through my veins, tears were pouring down my cheeks, my heart shattering.

He threw his head back, laying it on the mattress. Heaving out a long sigh, his arm fell to the floor, the needle stuck in a vein.

This couldn’t be real. I had to have fallen asleep with Meredith and this was a nightmare. I would have known! I would have seen the signs. This was not happening.

A sob breaking free, he snatched his attention to me and cursed.

“Twyla.”

Shaking my head, I started to back away. Why? Why would he do this? How long? And what the hell was in the needle?

My stomach cramping, bile coated my throat, another sob escaping. Logan grunted and scrambled to his feet.

“Babe, wait.”

The wall was at my back, pain and sorrow engulfing me. My forever, he was my forever. What the hell was he doing?

He staggered, his steps uneven and shaking. Flinging the door open, he bumped into the frame, his eyes glazed. “Babe,” he muttered, reaching for me.

I slapped at him, rage zipping through my blood. “Don’t touch me!” I screeched, blinded by my tears.

He grabbed his temples and swayed. “Fuck. Just…let me explain—”

“Explain?” I wailed, bending over to wrap my arms over my stomach. “There’s nothing to explain, I’m not stupid!”

“We gotta talk.”

“Fuck you!”

Spinning, I tried to run for the stairs, but he grabbed the back of my shirt and yanked me so hard, I lost my footing and fell to my ass. Grumbling, he dragged me into his room and shut the door.

I scooted away, cringing when it brought me near that goddamn metal box. Looking down, I saw a small baggie, several other needles, a couple that had something in it, a lighter, and a burnt spoon.
